Hairline reconstruction is a surgical procedure which allows a person to have their frontal hairline advanced, depending on variables such as pre-operative hairline height, patient preference and scalp laxity.
Hairline is the most visible and noticeable part of an individual’s head. In the late 30s, men are usually susceptible to suffer hair loss from the frontal hairline. Hairline placement requirements vary from person to person depending upon the size of face and forehead. Hair loss from the frontal hairline may be hereditary or induced by lifestyle. However, most people are prone to have this problem after attaining 30 years.
In the 40s, the hair loss may progress and make the frontal hairline even less dense. Therefore, an early hair reconstruction is needed to tackle this. How the Height of Headline can be Determined?
Determining the Height of Headline
The lateral hairline can be placed in line with the exterior of the individual’s eye called lateral canthus. A universal belief in frontal hairline placement is that the adult hairline is somewhat higher than the adolescent hairline. Natural appearance and proper angle of implantation on the frontal hairline plays a very significant role for the looks of the patient.
To create an aesthetically pleasing artistic hairline your doctor will discuss and ask your opinion to draw a new hairline which will be most suitable for your face. The surgeon has to mimic the natural hairline shapes (temporal points, widow’s peaks/tufts, lateral humps, wavy and feathery hairlines, etc.) and alter the shape and contour of the hairline according to the patient’s face, age and desired result.
Special care must be given towards the orientation, angulation and position of each graft in order to achieve results which look natural. The best technique to place a hairline is to measure the distance between the nose and eyes and the same distance shall be kept between the headline and eyebrows. This will keep the reconstruction and the appearance balanced.
This technique was previously termed Follicular Unit Extraction and was published in 2002 by Dr Bernstein and Dr Rassman. This technique involves extraction of individual follicular units (FU) or follicles from the donor area and implantation in the recipient area. It established the use of small, circular punch which aided in incision of the skin and separation of surrounding tissue from the graft. This technique gained popularity in next few years after facing initial criticism like any other.
In the year 2018, the term ‘extraction’ was replaced by ‘excision’ in an attempt to emphasise the minimally yet invasive nature of the procedure and avoid misleading patients.
