What is Lichen Planopilaris?

Lichen Planopilaris is an uncommon inflammatory disease which leads to patchy progressive permanent hair loss mostly on the scalp. It is a form of lichen planus which mostly affects the scalp and mainly affects middle-aged women. It normally causes tiny red pimples which appear just about a cluster of hairs. The occurrence of blistering is rare in this case. This condition manly affects the hair follicles; however the lesions can also occur on the skin and mucous membranes. Its common signs and symptoms include increased hair shedding, tenderness, itching, burning and scaling. Hair loss in this condition can be permanent in case the condition leads to permanent scarring. Treatment is generally done with steroids, hydroxychloroquine and accutane. However in some cases hair transplant may be effective. It has three forms as follows:

  • Classic lichen planopilaris
  • Graham Little syndrome
  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia
